On 1 Feb 2016, the Director-General of the World Health Organization declared that the cluster of microcephaly cases and other neurological disorders reported in Brazil, following a similar cluster in French Polynesia in 2014, constitute a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) requiring a coordinated international response.
The announcement followed an Expert Committee meeting called under the International Health Regulations (IHR).
