Venison exports will "increase" despite first anthrax outbreak in 70 years, but scientists remain adamant: Herd numbers must fall further.
Yamelo-Nenets governor Dmitry Kobylkin has suggested the winter cull of reindeer will be around 100 000, a figure that is lower than scientists proposed in order to preserve overgrazed pastures and limit the spread of new outbreaks of anthrax. At the same time, the region has said it is confident venison exports to Scandinavia and elsewhere in Europe
