Many autumn-winter rice fields in the Mekong Delta are affected by bacterial leaf blight disease. The area has grown rice for many years, but this year's [2016] yield has been the lowest. Farmers face a poor harvest because of diseases.
Bad weather and disease outbreaks have also increased production costs. Many farmers sowed the autumn-winter crop early because the annual flooding by the Mekong River was unusually brief.
