Finally, good news for the endangered Key deer: The number of deer found to be infected with New World screwworm on Big Pine Key and No Name Key is slowly going down, along with the number of those having to be euthanized. Kevin Lowry, chief public information officer with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service at the National Key Deer Refuge, said even though the parasitic screwworm larvae have caused the deaths of 114 Key deer, none had to be euthanized Tuesday [25 Oct 2016].
