White nose syndrome -- United States
White nose syndrome [WNS], a fungal disease that has decimated bat populations throughout the eastern United States and Canada, has been discovered for the 1st time in Rhode Island.
The Department of Environmental Management announced on [Thu 5 May 2016] that a tri-colored bat hibernating in Newport County this past winter [2015-2016] tested positive for the disease and that soil samples from 2 other locations in the county confirmed the presence of the fungus.
