The Health Ministry has warned of an outbreak of the West Nile virus (WNV) in Israel, after 4 cases were reported in the last 2 months since March [2016].
One patient was diagnosed as having the virus, while the other 3 cases were estimated as having the illness but were not confirmed.

A horse kept at a 50-horse stable in West Bend has tested positive for equine herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1), says Dr. Paul McGraw, Wisconsin's State Veterinarian with the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP). EHV-1 is a highly contagious virus that causes respiratory disease, reproductive failure, and intermittent outbreaks of neurologic disease in horses. Humans cannot acquire EHV-1.
The horse began showing neurologic signs earlier this week and was humanely euthanized.

A case [of a hantavirus infection] has caused a commotion in the Buenos Aires [province] city, Azul. A 12-year-old child died after becoming infected by [a] hantavirus in her school. As a result, the authorities of the institution decided to close the school in order to carry out disinfection tasks.
The victim went to the Normal School and according to information provided by the head of the Department of Rural Zoonoses, Jorge Bolpe, the girl died from having contracted the disease.

South Australia [SA] Health says 11 meningococcal cases have been confirmed so far this year [2016], an unusually high number.
Health Minister Jack Snelling says the patients are aged between 1 and 94 years and that 4 of those cases have developed over the past 2 weeks.
SA Health chief medical officer Paddy Phillips says it compares with 7 meningococcal cases this time last year [2015] and a total of 30 throughout 2015.

The Equine Disease Communication Center (EDCC) has reported that 3 horses in Erie County, New York [state], tested positive for equine herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1) last week.
"On 6 May 2016, 3 aged mares, all displaying neurologic signs, were confirmed positive for equine herpesvirus-1 on PCR," the EDCC reported. "Neurologic signs along with a positive EHV-1 PCR meets (New York's) case definition for equine herpes myeloencephalopathy (EHM). Both EHV-1 and EHM are reportable in New York.
