Tickborne encephalitis virus (TBEV), a member of the family Flaviviridae, genus _Flavivirus_, causes tickborne encephalitis (TBE). In Denmark, TBE is endemic only on the island of Bornholm, with an incidence of 4 per 100 000 inhabitants per year [1,2].
