The number of _Vibrio vulnificus_ infections in Florida jumped to 33 cases as of [2 Oct 2017], according to Florida Department of Health data. In 2016, Florida reported 46 cases, including 10 deaths.
_V. vulnificus_ can cause disease in those who eat contaminated seafood or have an open wound that is exposed to warm seawater containing the bacterium. Ingestion of _V._ vulnificus can cause vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain. It can also cause an infection of the skin when open wounds are
