Researchers have found a new genetic mutation that makes the chickenpox virus (_Varicella zoster_) life-threatening in rare cases.
The study, published this week in the Journal of Clinical Investigation, found that for 2 out of every 10 000 people with the genetic mutation, it can lead to inflammation of the brain, and for 20 out of every 10 000 people, it can lead to severe pneumonia.
