A total of 4 cases of ergot toxicity were initially reported in Southland and South Otago which had affected a large number of cows, according to VetSouth Winton veterinarian Hayden Dore.
The vet said the dry summer and wet autumn conditions contributed to the appearance of the fungus in the region; with many of the cases he had seen affecting the hind limbs of cows.
