Getting stuck in the mud has never been so dangerous in the Top End, as monsoons boost the risk of a deadly bacterium found in soil.
There has been 17 cases of melioidosis in the Northern Territory since October 2016, and 1 person has already died. That is higher than usual, and authorities are warning that contact with mud, puddles and wind-blown soil during heavy rain increases the chance of exposure to the tropical disease.
