Leishmaniasis -- France
The [parasitic infection] canine leishmaniasis is currently threatening 1 million dogs in the south of France. To date, about 40 000 dogs have already been found to be infected. The alert concerns 14 departments including 2 in Corsica, since the affected area increased throughout 2015.
The disease can also affect humans (40 cases reported each year) and other mammals. It is transmitted through the bites of flying insects (phlebotomus sand flies).
